GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A 145th Gettysburg anniversary concert, “Favorite Melodies of the North and South,” will be performed three times on July 4 and 5 by an ensemble of dance, parlor and camp music string bands.
The Grand Army of the Republic hall at 53 East Middle Street is the venue for the concerts, which are dedicated to the memory and in recognition of the soldiers and civilians who were affected by the 1863 battle.
Historic Gettysburg-Adams County will give tours of the G.A.R. Hall’s memorabilia collection. Concert times are Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
The performing groups include the Victorian Dance Ensemble, Susquehanna Travellers, pianist Helen Beedle, Camptown Shakers, 77th New York Regimental Balladeers and Libby Prison Minstrels.
All of them are known for their re-creation of period dances and music. Quite a few of the musicians started out performing around campfires at reenactments. Today, they appear at museums, colleges, national historic sites, battlefields and commemorative events.
Parlor pianist Beedle will perform music of the most prominent composers of the time on a Steinway & Sons grand concert piano from Reifsnyder’s Inc. of Lancaster. The Victorian Dance Ensemble will demonstrate a series of dances that were widely enjoyed during the Civil War.
Tickets will be available at the door, $10 for the general public and $9 for reenactors, veterans and seniors. Tickets are $8 if ordered before June 15 by e-mail at cwhmg@webtv.net. For concert and ticket information call (717) 334-5185 or (518) 734-5655.
